Senior Staff Software Engineer

Palo Alto, CA

Software Engineering Lead for Automotive Visualization

I serve as the Technical Lead for the team that deployed Unreal Engine in production vehicles—the first production deployment of its kind in the automotive industry. This work has enabled me to apply my expertise in real-time 3D rendering and game engine technology to create innovative vehicle interfaces and driver assistance visualization systems.

As Technical Lead, I led the first production deployment of Unreal Engine in automotive vehicles, an industry-first achievement that brought real-time 3D rendering and AAA-quality visuals to all Rivian vehicles (R1T, R1S, Amazon EDV). This groundbreaking implementation transformed the in-vehicle experience, enabling dynamic and personalized user interfaces that display the exact configuration each customer purchased, including paint color, wheel design, interior trim, and other configuration details. The implementation is highly scalable and provides a foundation for future personalization features.

Cel-Shading Project: Led the technical architecture for Rivian's distinctive cel-shaded visualization system, delivering a unique brand execution for vehicle graphics in automotive HMI. This patent-pending innovation established Rivian's visual identity and was successfully delivered in time for the Gen-2 launch. The cel-shaded interface features nine distinct drive modes, each with unique animated landscapes that reflect the selected mode (e.g., Snow Mode with winter scenes, Sport Mode with racetrack-inspired backdrops).

Driver Assistance Visualization: Developed comprehensive driver assistance visualization software, working closely with Self-Driving, UI/UX, Infotainment, and Vehicle Integration teams. This work helps push innovation and adoption of Self Driving / Autonomy and includes features such as Lane Centering, Lane Change, Adaptive Cruise Control, Parking Assistance and Blind Spot Monitoring to name a few.

Architecture & Leadership: Architected and implemented innovative automotive HMI integration solutions, establishing new patterns for multi-application systems. Delivered significant performance improvements across framerate, latency, memory usage, and package size. Led team growth and served as technical gatekeeper and architectural authority for high-level architecture and design decisions.

Patent Innovation: Listed as inventor on U.S. Patent Application #20250285478 "Dynamic Vehicle Rendering System" (published September 2025), which encompasses the foundational technology behind the infotainment visualization systems.

Extended vehicle rendering technology to the Rivian mobile application, developing a sophisticated 3D rendering system that produces vehicle renderings matching exact vehicle configurations. The system accurately represents each owner's specific vehicle including trim level, wheel design, paint color, and other configuration details, enabling a personalized and accurate vehicle representation.

Technical Implementation: Implemented cel-shaded artwork for vehicle visualization in the mobile app, maintaining visual consistency with the in-vehicle infotainment system. The rendering system dynamically generates 3D models that reflect real-time vehicle state, such as showing a charging cable when the vehicle is plugged in.

Industry Recognition: This work contributed to Rivian's mobile app receiving MotorTrend's "Best Tech" awards for Automaker App in both 2025 (inaugural award) and 2026 (second consecutive win). MotorTrend specifically praised the app's attention to detail, noting that "Rivian took the time to color-code the vehicle rendering to your own R1T truck or R1S SUV" and highlighting it as "a level of detail missing from the competition."

Cross-Platform Deployment: This project demonstrated successful cross-platform deployment of vehicle rendering technology, extending the innovative visualization work from in-vehicle displays to mobile applications. The mobile app rendering system provides owners with a seamless experience across all Rivian touchpoints, demonstrating the scalability and versatility of the foundational rendering technology.
